so many links, click ’em

I whittled through a bunch of links in the good ol’ Google Reader last night and tonight since I slept away most of today trying to get rid of the sore throat, headache and fever, blah.  Most of these links are a little overdue, but they’re still goodies.

Art

* Although this is a beautiful piece, they’re using an incredibly questionable media.  I don’t think that it’s worth the dangers that it poses to the animals.  Simultaneously, I think that it’s an ingenious commentary on the rage that’s present in these fights.

Books

* I just finished reading Watchmen and it’s the first novel that I can say with certainty that I’ll read again.  Many of its scenes and characters provide room for various perceptions.  This companion novel, Watching the Watchmen, is definitely on my Christmas list.

Games

* Mario Kart is old school and has become a classic Nintendo game.  One of the sites I frequent, Geekologie found two articles within one week that feature this game.  The first video was a man from Italy who acted out the game in the city streets.  The second video is a young guy with his own little emo song on YouTube.  It’s too emo for my personal taste, but the lyrics are a great tribute to the game.

Food

* Dinner tonight.  I needed something that was easy on my throat, and I’ve heard that onions and garlic are full of vitamins for colds, so I loaded it with both.

* Whoever knows me, knows I like to cook and especially bake.  Thanks to a friend in DC, she led me to a link of Gormet Magazine’s Favorite Cookies from 1941-2008.

Music, T.V. and Movies

* Students taking prescription medication to increase brainpower and focus is not only is the in the news, it’s on my TiVo.  I was catching up on my Boston Legal episodes yesterday and one of the cases they heard was about a girl who admitted that she used Adderall to focus her studying for the SATs.  After the school she was planning to attend, Harvard, found out about her using a medication that hadn’t been prescribed to her, they rescinded her acceptance.

* Amazon listed its top 10 DVDs and Albums.  They include customer picks too.

* This is just funny.  Another Andy Samberg hit.  Jizz in My Pants.

The Web

 * The Boston Globe updates this site almost daily, The Big Picture features a series of photographs taken at a very high resolution and the stories they tell are very poignant and relevant.  Check it out.

* I’ve been hesitant to use one of the new themes for Gmail and Google reader, but this one, Helvetireader, is nice and lean.

* This is just fun if you’re an avid Google user as I am.  I will be putting my envelope in the mail tomorrow.  FREE STICKERS.

* I think we’re all smart enough to know better, but if you use Facebook, beware of the latest Facebook virus.

* I love her website, Indexed.  This is one of her cards from about a week ago, but it’s so good.

News

* Roland Fryer has the idea to pay students for good grades, $50 per ‘A’ per every 5 weeks.  I saw this on Colbert, and was floored.

* Crate and Barrel, my part time gig, got a glowing write up in the New York Times Business Section.
