whew

February 27, 2009

I ran this morning and it was humbling.  I may have ran a half marathon last fall, but you wouldn’t know it by my performance today.  I completed approximately 1.9 miles in 16min 50sec.  It’s close to a 9 minute mile, according to mapmyrun.com it was 8:56min per mile.  That was encouraging since I expected a 12 minute mile going into the run.  It was so nice out, I couldn’t resist though.

Keeping all of this in mind, while I might not get the time I want for the 5k coming up for St. Patrick’s day, I will be able to finish it =).  I’ve run most of the course before, and I’m only nervous for the hill near the state house, that will be a force to reckon with, but if I can do the hill on River Road and the one on Mineral Spring, it should be cake.  I just have to keep increasing my distance so the 3+ mile race is routine and I can work on my time a bit.

In other news, I’ve passed my second derby assessment, with a caveat that I reassess my whips in two weeks.  I’m cool with that, but now I NEED my name.  I’ll put a poll up with the names I’ve put together so far… you be the judge, and put in your two cents.

slacker

February 23, 2009

Clearly, I’m a slacker.  I’m sorry to all of those who pay attention and I have noticed that I haven’t been updating this page like I should.  Truth is, I haven’t been doing much other than keeping up with my day job, and going to roller derby practice, oh and playing Final Fantasy X.

I was in Baltimore over the weekend cheering on the Rhode Island Riveters, our All-Star Travel Team.  We (two rookie skaters, a boy and me) drove the 6-hour trip to Charm City and watched our girls give it their all, only to be defeated by a landslide.  One of their co-captains, Dolly Rocket, used to play for PRD, but now she’s a mean Pivot for the Charm City Roller Girls.  They have an incredibly agile jammer too, Joy Collision, who picked through our blockers like she was pulling weeds, she’s truly a force on the track.  I hope to link to some of my friend’s photos once they’re posted.

I haven’t watched too many movies lately.  I need to work on that, since I have three Netflix discs, just sitting.

For now, that’s it, I have to watch one of these dusty discs and think of a derby name… let the brainstorming continue.

roller derby

January 20, 2009

I’ve passed my first assessment (skating skills) and now I’ve started my contact practices with providence roller derby.  Within the next month, I hope to complete the contact assessment and be into scrimmage practice.  Then, after a bit of that business I’ll be able to test for the scrimmaging skills and be qualified to bout!  wooooooo hoooo.

“But what’s your derby name?” you ask.  As soon as I pass my contact assessment, I’ll be eligible to choose a name and number.  I’ve done a lot of brainstorming and there have been quite a few suggestions thrown around by the girls in the league, but nothing’s really struck me yet.  Yet…

So, for the next couple of weeks I’ll be taking suggestions for my derby name and number.  I hope to hear from all of you who stop by and check things out.

tivo is socialism

November 10, 2008

according to the Steven Colbert episode with Wilco anyway.  It was a fun interview w/Jeff Tweedy and he put together a very Wilco-y tune just for the show.  It originally aired on October 30 but I didn’t watch until tonight.  Well worth the 22 minutes I spent on it =).

I haven’t posted much the past couple of days, but I’ve been busy catching up on Tivo, and reading… yeah people still do that, amazing stuff, reading.  i’m still working on American Elf by James Kolchaka and it’s great.  so refreshing to see that the silly everyday things that i deal with (trying to be sober when I’m clearly drunk, dreading personal meetings or travels, putting off cleaning up the cat’s hairballs) are the same things that other people deal with.  here are some links that have caught my interest since the election:

Why it’s a good idea to appeal the passing of Prop 8

it’s rudimentary discrimination, and reminiscent of the 5/3 law…

Obama’s economic plan reminds even Canadians of Ronald Reagan

I especially like their dollar to dollar comparison of McCain’s plan to Obama’s.

This link is one of astronomical proportions… Truly amazing

The file is huge, but it’s gorgeous and somewhat unbelievable, for me anyways. (that’s what she said)

This graphic is a little overwhelming at first but I like the way it’s organized.

I saw a link to this trailer for Up Pixar’s latest movie on PopCandy this week.

I also got in a run before it got dark.  I didn’t think I’d be running in the cold, in fact my chest was burning near the end, but it felt good.
